  • A better way to get to space: Dr. Michael Kelzenberg at TEDxWSU 2014

Externally powered thermal rockets differ from chemical rockets in that they directly heat a low molecular weight propellant such as hydrogen, and are thus limited only by the amount of heat that can be imparted to the working fluid. One way of providing heat to a thermal rocket is by wirelessly beaming it, as microwave energy, from the ground. This type of propulsion will offer a ten-fold improvement in payload fraction over existing chemical propulsion systems, and exciting progress is being made to turn this concept into a reality. In fact, the utility of electromagnetic power beaming isn't limited to space launch rockets. By developing safe, efficient power beaming systems, it is possible to deliver electricity to flying unmanned aircraft systems, enabling a new generation of sustainab...

Argon would not be used for a full scale launcher system where Isp wants to be maximised. A 25% increase in performances vs cold thrust was observed. The rocket and heat exchanger were not optimized and therefore did not reach significant altitude, which was expected (reached roughly 10m, expected 16m per simulation based on thrust measurement). Elon Musk talks about beamed energy propulsion and its concerns and challenges. Elon Musk: "The beamed energy thing is interesting. I mean, I think it is a worthy area of research. I think it's worth trying to make something work, trying to get something to orbit, or a really high delta velocity with beamed energy, and see how well does it work in practice. I mean I do think there's - I'll state some concerns, but these concerns are not meant to say we should not work on them. I preface it by saying we should work on it. I think there are some scaling challenges with beamed energy. You have to say what's the actual power output you need to send, say, a Falcon-line class vehicle to orbit? And its a very, very big number. You start needing like, we need like the power of the Eastern Seaboard, you know, to send something Falcon, call it Falcon heavy class, you know, what do you need to send something like that to orbit? It's really a huge amount of energy, or a huge amount of power, to be precise. So actually the power level you need is - you don't need, arguably not that much on energy basis, but you can't tell everyone to turn their lights off in Florida. So then you need like a huge power plant or a huge capacitor bank or a huge high-power density battery array. So I'd like to see how well does it scale? And then you say what's the cost of the huge power plant and the huge laser array and that kind of thing, and how does that compare to the cost per unit mass if you just carry your own oxygen with you and have a lower ISP and don't do any of those things?" He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Light propulsion device: can purify the air and generate clean energy. Scientists in Belgium have come up with a way to capture polluted air and convert it into energy in the form of hydrogen gas, a technology that could be a two-prong environmental panacea. The device is only in the proof-of-concept stage at this time, but researchers hope to be able to expand it for industrial applications and have to produce clean energy in a similar way to a solar panel, cleaning the surrounding air while it is in it . One way to produce hydrogen gas today is through the electrolysis process, where an electric current is applied to the water to divide it into hydrogen and oxygen. The use of clean water as a starting point for this process is attractive even we have seen hydrogen extraction kits for the home but what if you can do it without the power source, and pull the harmful particles of air at the same time . One of the main differences with electrolysis is that in our configuration no additional electrical energy is required, the University of Leuven by Sammy Verbruggen explains to New Atlas. The device works with polluted air and light, that's all. The invention began with the discovery by team members of the University of Louvain who discovered that the production of hydrogen gas using this device does not necessarily require clean liquid water, but can also be realized by capturing the molecules of Water out of the air. Here we take the next step by using polluted air and this seems to work even better. #Light #propulsion #device #energy #scientists #time #technology #gas #air #oxygen #molecules #ymasciencia

By developing safe, efficient power beaming systems, it is possible to deliver electricity to flying unmanned aircraft systems, enabling a new generation of sustainably powered flight. In an age where wireless communications are ubiquitous, and where electric cars are becoming commonplace on our roadways; it is not difficult to foresee a future in which wireless energy transfer will revolutionize the way we access the skies and beyond. Bio- Michael Kelzenberg is a Lead Research Engineer at Escape Dynamics Inc. He leads the UAV Power Systems group, which is developing novel rectenna technologies and power management systems for efficient, wirelessly powered aircraft. Michael received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 2010, where he worked in the research group of Professor Harry Atwater. His graduate research focused on the development of high-performance silicon microwire photovoltaics, including their growth, fabrication, characteri-zation, and simulation. In 2010, he co-founded Caelux Corp. in Pasadena CA, to continue development of novel photovoltaic technologies. Michael's current research interests include renewable energy, solar cells, rectennas, wireless power beaming, and power management. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Positron Dynamics is out to make space travel to distant stars a reality using antimatter. Antimatter is the most energy-dense material known. Positrons are the easiest form of antimatter to produce. With physics that is understood today, any hopes of traveling beyond the edge of the Solar System can only be realized with antimatter. To get there, our first steps lie in Earth’s orbit.

PRESS RELEASE IB Goksel Electrofluidsystems presents a first breakthrough in aerospace propulsion technology since the invention of the jet engine. The first critical tests have been successfully completed on the key technology for an air-breathing magneto-plasma propulsion that will enable future aircrafts and airships to reach altitudes from ground to 50km and beyond. It is the first time that a dense plasma focus (DPF) could be observed at one atmosphere using the innovative technology of nanosecond electrostatic excitations to create self-organized plasma channels for ignition of the propulsive main discharge. Detailed results will be soon published as papers in peer-reviewed plasma physics journals. The breakthrough was achieved through a collaboration between Mr. Goksel from Electrofluidsystems and Prof. Mashek from St. Petersburg State University. The first idea goes back to 2010 where a team around Mr. Goksel with several universities and companies in Europe submitted a FP7 proposal named PLASMASOL. The project was rejected but now needs to be reactivated after demonstration of the new innovative ignition technology at all relevant atmospheric pressures. Building on years of unique engineering know-how with plasma propelled airships and the soon to be released plasma flyer, the world’s first plasma flow controlled flying wing, Electrofluidsystems has shown that Europe remains at the forefront of technological innovation and can get ahead in the global race. This technology, also in combination with other air-breathing chemical propulsion systems like pulse detonation jets, could revolutionize the future of air and near-space travel. It is also possible now to imagine atmospheric high-thrust hybrid propulsion systems using pulsed aneutronic fusion based on boron-11-nucleus and ionized hydrogen (proton) fuels. The resulting highly energetic carbon-12 product fissions into three alpha particles with an energy output of 8.9 MeV without any gamma rays: P + 11B --} 12 C --} 3 (4He) + 8.9 MeV. So far this technology was only proposed for high thrust space propulsion with thrust levels of 1000 kN and beyond by scientists from theAFRL at Edwards AFB, the University of Illinois at Urbana, and the University of Alabama. Now the magnetoplasma flux compression technology is in reach for atmospheric plasma propulsion and will enable a new set of revolutionary single-stage to orbit (SSTO) spaceplane designs which will go far beyond those recently proposed with combined air-breathing rocket engine technology. PHOTONIC - ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE TRANSMISSION & CONVERSION PROPULSION (Method 15b) - "Antigravity" Method 15 of 15b -- PHOTONIC - ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE TRANSMISSION & CONVERSION PROPULSION (Method 15B) Group VIA ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE CONVERSION PROPULSION Methodology can be achieved mechanically or electrically, and can be broken down further into three subdivisions:- a) Direct Mechanical Conversion, b) Electrical Conversion and c) Mechanical Pressure Electric Conversion &Type c) Mechanical Pressure Electric Conversion Propulsion Type a) Direct Mechanical Conversion example include Solar thermal rockets which could make use of solar power to directly heat reaction mass, and therefore does not require an electrical generator as most other forms of solar-powered propulsion do. Type c) Mechanical Pressure Electric Conversion Propulsion has already been described in Method 15a but grouped here as well because the electrical energy required for laser propulsion can be converted from solar cells or other devices in space. Masers could be used to power a painted conventional solar sail, with a layer of chemicals designed to evaporate when struck by microwave radiation. The momentum generated by maser evaporation would significantly increase the thrust generated by solar sails, as a form of lightweight ablative laser propulsion, as indicated by this experiment. Type b) Electrical conversion examples include solar cells that receive electromagnetic radiation mainly in the visible spectrum and convert it into electrical energy that can then power a propulsive force. Electromagnetic radiation including 'light' is a self propagating wave with both magnetic and electrical components. Radio waves are also Electromagnetic waves of much lower frequency than visible light. Wireless power transfer by resonant inductive coupling with a continuous wave MF (Medium Frequency-short wave) oscillator. (Tesla Coil) Continuing on from the right and towards the visible light spectrum, we now move from LF to MF, the Medium Frequency Band, which is slightly higher than the Medium Wave (MW) radio band, and within the shortwave region, a frequency of approximately 2.2 MHz. Wireless transmission and reception This small Tesla coil a fairly typical air core design. The secondary elevated helical coil has a wire winding that is approx. ¼ of a full wavelength long, based on the velocity of propagation of the disturbance through the coil itself and the oscillation rate of the circuit designed to be used where the break rate equals the operating frequency. The wavelength of a wave is the distance from one peak or trough to the next, at a ¼ wavelength, the amplitude of a wave is at its maximum height allowing the connected terminal capacitance or "top load" sphere, to radiate close to this peak, where the highest potential coincides with the elevated top load terminal. This is a demonstration of what Tesla Called "his system" and described it as longitudinal wave transmission & reception as opposed to radio transmission & reception systems which he called the "Hertz Wave System" which is basically distinct from the "free-space" waves, such as those studied by Hertz in his UHF experiments which is affected only by rays transmitted through the air, conduction being excluded. Whereas in Tesla's system as per the example there is no appreciable radiation and the receiver is energized through the earth while an equivalent electrical displacement occurs in the surrounding atmosphere. Two ¼ wave resonators a transmitter and a receiver can be connected together and become one ½ wave resonator or bipolar Tesla coil that achieve twice the potential difference a single terminal produces and equal and opposite voltage as the propagating fields are 90o apart relative to one another. Comparable to a tandem Van de Graaff generator, which can produce accelerating potentials twice as high as that from a single Van de Graaff because ions gain kinetic energy twice, once as negative ions and then as positive ions in a tandem fashion. If I now split the ½ wave resonator coils with a single wire to become two separate ¼ coils they will still function as before, where one becomes a transmitter and the other a receiver where a primary is connected by inductive coupling to become a step down transformer to power a high current load and instead of a single wire connection we can therefore use the ground as our single wire connected together over a distance. It was an extension of the transmission through a single wire without a return that convinced Tesla that distance was of no consequence and energy could be conveyed from one to any point of the globe, in any desired amount.

This is a little demonstration of energy flowing of a spinner at the top of a solid state Tesla coil. The sharp points on the spinner seem to focus the ion stream or what ever it is that propels the spinner. The question would be what is actually the prime mover and what is moving? Is it actually pushing air or is it a stream of something else? After studying the comments since the post I've learned many things about this experiment. So far the best explanation comes from a recent comment from a viewer who posted a very informative link. I'd like to share it with everyone: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_discharge I still have some experiments to try because I have questions as to why the focus is so clean and directed in the video but we'll see what I come across. I'm very thankful for everyone's comments and participation with the experiment. Many have mentioned the sound of a fan that comes on when the flame of the torch is blown out. They also complain about my mouth making funny noises. The explanation for both of these are in this short video: https://youtu.be/WJXH7fs0ziM I've been asked to post a circuit drawing. http://www.autobytel.com KLD Energy recently invited journalists out to Santa Monica, CA to show off their One Drive system. Traditionally, when an OEM wants to make an Electric Vehicle they often have to source a battery from one part of the globe and are then tasked with figuring out how to make it work with a motor that came from a completely different supplier. What makes KLD unique is that their One Drive system is a three part package consisting of a versatile battery, custom made power controller with built in baseline programming maps and the piece de resistance, Ray Caamano's next generation electric motor that have all been designed to work together; right out of the box. Produced by the Atomic Energy Agency and NASA, this film details Project NERVA -- the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application. This was a joint program of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and NASA managed by the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office (SNPO) at the Nuclear Rocket Development Station in Jackass Flats, Nevada U.S.A. Between 1959 and 1972, the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office oversaw 23 reactor tests, As the narrator states, "The proposed mission to explore the moon, in addition to further missions, will require the acceleration and deceleration of very heavy loads." This documentary explores the use of nuclear propulsion to complement the chemical fuels used in today's rockets. The film shows a Saturn 5 rocket on its launchpad, launch and flight [including stage separation and air-ground shots]; the concept of substituting a nuclear 3rd stage to increase payload velocity; 1950s research in New Mexico to determine the feasibility of nuclear energy in rocket propulsion; development of engine technology via the NERVA project, engine testing; a description of how this technology may be used for a theoretical mission to Mars. By the end of the program, NERVA had demonstrated that nuclear thermal rocket engines were a feasible and reliable tool for space exploration, and at the end of 1968 SNPO certified that the latest NERVA engine, the NRX/XE, met the requirements for a manned Mars mission. Although NERVA engines were built and tested as much as possible with flight-certified components and the engine was deemed ready for integration into a spacecraft, much of the U.S. space program was cancelled by Congress before a manned visit to Mars could take place. NERVA was considered by the AEC, SNPO and NASA to be a highly successful program; it met or exceeded its program goals. Its principal objective was to "establish a technology base for nuclear rocket engine systems to be utilized in the design and development of propulsion systems for space mission application" Virtually all space mission plans that use nuclear thermal rockets use derivative designs from the NERVA NRX or Pewee. The Rover/NERVA program accumulated 17 hours of operating time with 6 hours above 2000 K. Although the engine, turbine and liquid hydrogen tank were never physically assembled together, the NERVA was deemed ready to design into a working vehicle by NASA, creating a small political crisis in Congress because of the danger a Mars exploration program presented to the national budget. Clinton P. Anderson, the New Mexico senator who had protected the program, had become severely ill. Lyndon B. Johnson, another powerful advocate of human space exploration, had decided not to run for a second term and was considerably weakened. NASA program funding was somewhat reduced by Congress for the 1969 budget, and the incoming Nixon administration reduced it still further for 1970, shutting down the Saturn rocket production line and cancelling Apollo missions after Apollo 17. Without the Saturn S-N rocket to carry the NERVA to orbit, Los Alamos continued the Rover Program for a few more years with Pewee and the Nuclear Furnace, but it was disbanded by 1972. The most serious injury during testing was a hydrogen explosion in which two employees sustained foot and ear drum injuries. At one point in 1965, during a test at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, the liquid hydrogen storage at Test Cell #2 was accidentally allowed to run dry ; the core overheated and ejected on to the floor of the Nevada desert. Test Site personnel waited 3 weeks and then walked out and collected the pieces without mishap. The nuclear waste from the damaged core was spread across the desert and was collected by an Army group as a decontamination exercise. An engine of this type is on outdoor display on the grounds of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama. * MTLS - Millimeter-wave Thermal Launch System First flight of a beam-powered thermal rocket (millimeter-wave thermal rocket) which was the conclusion of the MTLS NASA/DARPA Program. Beam director used a 100kW class W band source. Propellant used was argon which has a poor Isp but great thrust, necessary for a small demonstrator like this one. There are couple of reasons for that: - Coating of the tubes (susceptor layer absorbing the beam) was not uniform - Energy on target was less than a third of the source power. - The pan-tilt unit tracking the rocket did not have the correct command authority and therefore was "lagging" behind the rocket, scattering energy - The rocket did not have a pressure regulator and therefore the heat equilibrium was never reached as it was a blowdown system. This was a very fast-paced project where we did not have time to do refinement. There are easy ways to mitigate those problems in the future. Those are the first faltering steps of this technology.
